General Information - About LP & Natural Gas

All SYAM Gas appliances are able to operate both on LPGas and NGas. For NG however the appliance requires a simple NG conversion.

What is LP Gas?

LP Gas stands for "Liquefied Petroleum Gas" which is energy in a cylinder. It is versatile, fast, clean, powerful, portable and most importantly very safe. It is used in a wide range of applications, for cooking, heating, refrigeration and lighting. It is a modern, affordable alternative to electricity. And, because it comes in a bottle, it can be moved around. LPGas is nontoxic (not poisonous), clean burning and does not pollute the atmosphere. Therefore LPGas is a good choice for your energy needs.

What is NG - Natural Gas?

NG stands for Natural Gas and also used to be known as "town gas". This is supplied via a pipeline network. It is a convenient, easily tapped and cost effective energy source. The gas is used in a wide range of applications by domestic, hospitality and industrial consumers. Natural gas is formed through the decomposition of organic material beneath the earth's surface. It burns cleanly and producers mostly vapour and carbon dioxide as by-products. Due to this it also does not dry out the air like electrical appliances. To find out more about whether you have NG in your area and how to apply for supply please visit EgoliGas.

SYAM Gas Fueled Products

All SYAM Gas appliances are able to operate both on LPGas and NGas. For NG however the appliance requires a simple NG conversion. (Please discuss with your SYAM consultant when enquiring and/or purchasing for NG operation).

For SYAM gas appliances which will be installed on an existing or new installation it is required by law to be carried out by a SAQCC registered Gas Practitioner according to SANS 10087-1 for LPG and SANS 827 for NG and the Operators Manual supplied with the appliance. Also for years of safe and proper operation we urge our customers to read the user manuals provided with our products.

Safety Tips

In its natural state, LPGas is colourless and odourless. To make it even safer to use, a very strong smell is deliberately added. If you smell gas, never check for the leak with a naked flame. Open all windows and doors to allow fresh air into the room. Turn off the valve of the cylinder and, if possible, move it outdoors. Allow enough time for all the gas to leave the room before re-entering. When the smell has completely gone, take the cylinder to your nearest LPGas dealer and have it checked professionally. In the event that the appliance is a gas fireplace have your SAQCC registered gas practitioner check the gas installation and the appliance. Make sure that ventilation requirements in SANS 10087-1 and the Operators Manual are complied with.

The LPGSASA

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of Southern Africa (LPGSASA) is the organization representing many companies who are involved in the distribution and retailing of LPGas and related appliances and equipment. As the industry body, it is a section 21 (non-profit) company dedicated to the safe use of LPGas, everywhere in southern Africa – domestically, commercially and industrially. The LPGSASA works very closely with the various Fire Departments in the control and approval of all LPGas sites, with the SABS with all standards and Codes of Practice as they pertain to the industry and with the Department of Labour on safety related issues.

For more information on the safe use of LPGas, visit their website on: www.lpgas.co.za

Gas Installation

The Minister of Labour published on 4th October 1997 an amendment to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1993 in respect of 'The Vessel Under Pressure Regulations (VUP) No.17468'. In 2009 the VUP was replaced by the Pressure Equipment Regulation (PER) and Clause 17 of this regulation states that: "No person shall install or remove an appliance, pressure equipment or system for gas in any manner other than in accordance with the relevant safety standard incorporated into these regulations under section 44 of the Act.

...install or remove a gas appliance or a gas system unless such a person is an authorised person."

This regulation states that as from the 1st August 1997 it is a legal requirement that "No person shall install a fixed appliance, equipment or system for gas LP Gas fuel... Unless such person is a holder of a certificate of registration..."

LP Gas Practitioners are required by law to undergo specific training and are registered with and licensed by the South African Qualification and Certification Committee (LPGI). This body, referred to as the SAQCC Gas is administered on behalf of the Department of Labour. Registered installers are issued with an identity card bearing their photograph. The card also carries their name and grade i.e. Domestic, Commercial, Industrial or Auto, as well as the date of expiry of their license.

Where SYAM products require a gas installation the registered Gas Practitioner must comply with all mandatory requirements of SANS 10087-1 for LPG and SANS 827 for NG (current revision) and the Operators Manual. On completion of the installation, the SAQCC registered Gas Practitioner is required to advise the customer on how to use the appliance efficiently and safely. He also must issue the customer with a Certificate of Compliance (COC) which should be signed by both parties and becomes their guarantee that the installation has been carried out in compliance with the relevant standards/law. As a minimum the COC should include the following:- Certificate Number / Date of Installation / Installers name / Installers QCC Number / QCC Expiry Date / Installers Contact Numbers and should also include a detailed description of the installation.

For the name of your nearest SAQCC Registered Gas Practitioner familiar with SYAM products please feel free to contact SYAM Distributors at 011 845 4395 or email us directly.
