General Information - About Stainless Steel

Over time, corrosion can have a devastating effect on carbon steel. By taking chromium, in amount greater than 11% and adding it to carbon steel we create a steel with improved corrosion resisting properties – Stainless Steel.

The chromium content of the steel creates the formation of a tough, adherent, invisible, corrosion resisting chromium oxide film on the steel surface. The stainless steel family has many Grades with different characteristics. The corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties as well as other useful properties is enhanced by increasing the chromium content and the addition of other alloying elements such as nickel, titanium, molybdenum and nitrogen.

Long Term Value

When the total life cycle costs are considered, stainless steel is often the least expensive option.

Low Maintenance Costs

Stainless steel is washable using a dilute solution of household detergent without ammonia or chloride. Surfaces should be washed with a soft sponge and clean water. Where stainless steel is used under conditions such as fire applications compounded with harsh environmental conditions, corrosion attacks the material but can be repaired following proper techniques such as chemical or mechanical processes if the surface finishes permit this.

NOTE: Always ensure that if the appliance is received with, typically a white PVC plastic film over the stainless steel to protect it, is properly removed. Also that once the PVC plastic film is removed, that the glue residue that it leaves behind, is washed off. This can be done by carefully washing these places with very hot soapy water. One must be careful not to burn due to the hot water. This prevents smells when operating the appliance and makes it less prone to chloride corrosion attack – more aggressive closer to coastal areas.

Ease of Fabrication

Modern steel manipulation techniques mean that stainless steel can be cut, welded, formed and fabricated. Stainless steel is not difficult to fabricate, however different techniques need to be used.

Corrosion Resistance

Lower alloy grades resist corrosion in normal atmospheric and potable water environment, while the more highly alloyed grades can resist corrosion in many acids and alkaline solutions, and some chloride bearing environments. With the range of grades of stainless steel, this is not a problem, but you are advised to contact your supplier for more information.

Strength

The mechanical properties of stainless steels allow thinner sections to be used than with other materials, thus reducing weight without compromising strength. Austenitic grades tend to work harden with cold working.

Hygiene

Internationally recognized as by far the most hygienic surface for the preparation of foods. The unique surfaces of stainless steel have no pores or cracks to harbour dirt, grime or bacteria. This cleans ability far exceeds other surfaces and makes it the first choice for hygienic conditions, such as hospitals, kitchens, abattoirs and other food and beverage applications.

Our design team carefully selects the correct and suitable grade of stainless steel for SYAM products and the end use of them. Austenitic grades such as 304 are mainly used in the manufacture and construction of our products.
