If you have ever dismissed South Africa’s inherent fascination with braaing to be due to westernised infiltration, think again. In April of 2012 Archaeologists discovered the world’s first BBQ, and it is right here, nestled in the heart of South Africa.

The Wonderwerk Cave, located in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, is one of humanity’s oldest dwelling place. Our ancestors lived inside the cave for over 2 million years. The gorgeous cave holds the first proof that our ancient brethren were in fact, using fire to cook their food. This awesome discovery was an accidental one. A team of archaeologists were on a mission to determine the age of specific sediments found in the cave when they stumbled upon an incredible display. They saw, what appeared to be the remnants of a primitive campfire and braai.

Carbonised leafs and twig fragments were discovered as were bits of burned animal bone. The very first proof that our ancestors were able to control fires, and indoor fire mind you, is truly fascinating. What is even more incredible is that it all began here… in the braaing capital of the world.

South Africa, home to the world first Braai and In-door Fire place.
