Braai Care & Maintenance
So, you’ve purchased the new SYAM Stainless Steel Braai/BBQ of your choice, and now you want to keep it looking good, but what is the best way to do this? Many so called braai masters will tell you their favored tricks but in a short while their braais look like something off the scrap heap. Your SYAM Braai/BBQ is an investment that should last you for many years to come and with the correct care and attention, it will do just that.
When you first receive your Braai/BBQ it may have a white PVC plastic film over the stainless steel to protect it. This should be carefully removed and the unit then washed with hot soapy water to get rid of any remaining glue residue. Do not use products which contain chlorides, ammonia or chemicals as this is not suitable for stainless steel. You will have received with your braai, a cover that should be placed over the unit after every use and cleaning in order to protect it from the elements. As with anything of quality, your SYAM Braai/BBQ and LP Gas Cylinder Cage deserves to be taken care of and taking care of so that it always looks spectacular and performs to the standard you would expect from a SYAM Braai/BBQ.
Whether you have a mobile or one of the drop in units, a little bit of care will go a long way toward ensuring that your unit continues to look impressive.
Cleaning Stainless Steel
Stainless Steel scratches easily so NEVER use wire wool, metal brushes or abrasive powders on the casing. There are many cleaners on the market and you should try to find one that cleans and can protect the stainless steel. SYAM also supplies a stainless steel cleaner for our Braai/BBQ.
Intense heat can discolor your Braai/BBQ and burn any residue left from the cleaner, so use care when choosing the correct cleaner for your unit. Letting your braai preheat for too long will also eventually lead to discoloration of the steel.
If your Braai/BBQ has a dome lid, leave it in the open position directly after use to allow the heat to dissipate easily. SYAM Braais/BBQS are made of premium 304 grade stainless steel, so your unit will clean easily and keep its appearance if cared for properly.
Cleaning the Cooking Grid
Gas Grill
One motto to always keep in mind, “Every time you use it, clean it”.
While the cooking grid is still warm but not hot, wipe away any grease spills or marinade ooze, brush off any food particles that have cooked on the grid with a good stainless steel wire brush.
Remove the grid from the unit and wash it with warm, soapy water. A small amount of dishwashing liquid added to the water will help to remove grease from the grate and around the burners. Wipe around the burners with a damp cloth to clean up any spills of sauce or food particles that may have fallen through the grate. Remove the grease tray and clean it in hot soapy water.
Charcoal Grill
Brush off the grill with a stainless steel wire brush, removing food particles that have cooked on to it, lift the grill from the unit and wash it with warm soapy water.
Remove the ash and charcoal tray and clean thoroughly so that no excess burning smoke from food fallen particles or bad flavours will ruin your next braai.
General
These cleaning methods should be followed after every use of the Braai/BBQ to maintain its look and to avoid spoiling the flavours of the cooking when you have your next braai.
At least once a year or before storing away for the winter, your Braai/BBQ should be dismantled and thoroughly cleaned and all parts checked for damage or wear and tear. All parts should be thoroughly washed with warm soapy water, checked for any damage or defects and then returned to their proper places. The unit then should then be turned on to remove any excess water and soap so that it won’t burn the next time you try to braai. If any parts need to be replaced, this would be the time to replace them.
Finger prints on the stainless steel of the unit can be removed by wiping with a damp cloth and once this is done, the unit should be covered to ensure that it remains clean and fingerprint free.

Whether you have a Fireplace, Drop–In Designer Fireplace Grate, Firepit or LP Gas Cylinder Cage, a little bit of care will go a long way towards ensuring that your unit continues to look impressive.
Cleaning Stainless Steel
Stainless Steel scratches easily so NEVER use wire wool, metal brushes or abrasive powders on the casing. There are many cleaners on the market and you should try to find one that cleans and can protect the stainless steel. SYAM also stocks and supplies stainless steel cleaner.
You must always allow your fireplace to cool down to room temperature before you wipe it down. SYAM products are made of premium stainless steel, so your appliance will clean easily and keep its appearance if cared for properly.
The use of microfiber clothes would work exceptionally well (as they do not necessarily require cleaning materials) and these are highly recommended.
Cleaning the Grate of your Fire Feature
A small amount of dishwashing liquid added to the water will help to remove dust and finger marks on your fire feature. Wipe with a damp cloth (or again, make use of a microfiber cloth) to clean.
Operators Manuals
Always reference your Operator Manual to ensure that the correct procedures for operating and maintenance are followed.
Toolbox Care &
Maintenance
It is a lot easier than you think to clean, care and maintain your SYAM toolbox. Understanding what and how your toolbox is there for, and how it operates will certainly assist you in caring for it correctly.
Firstly, try to keep your unit free from dust, wiping it down with a soft (preferably microfibre) cloth. Secondly, from time to time, wet wipe (with soapy dish washing water) your unit, again, with a soft cloth. Rinse off the soapy residue by using a plain clean cloth that has been rinsed in water only. Thirdly, ensure to dry thoroughly. Then finally, periodically spray your drawer slider roller bearings and wheel caster bearings with a good quality lubricant such as Q20.
Drawer Opening
Make it “Good Practice” to open one drawer at a time. NEVER open all drawers at the same time.
Don’t Stand on the Drawers
Do not step on the drawer – even if you think you are light and the tool chest is loaded.
Keep Your Work Space Controlled
Do not let children near the tool chest. Keep your area as controlled as possible.
Pack from the Top Down
When packing the tool chest, do not start from the bottom – it might fall over. Rather, start from the top downwards.
Lock Casters when not Moving
Set the brake on the locking casters –
in the front – unless you are moving the tool chest.
Lock Drawers and Lid
Before moving the mobile chest unit, lock the drawers and lid. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
